A nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) is a thin, clear, flexible tube inserted into a patient’s nostril to help maintain an open airway. It is used to bypass upper airway obstructions at the level of the nose, nasopharynx, or base of the tongue, and helps prevent the tongue from falling backward and obstructing airflow.

The Lightning X LX-NPA6 Nasopharyngeal Airway Kit is a single-use airway management kit that includes six NPAs ranging from 22–32 French, each sterile and individually wrapped. This newly redesigned kit also includes lubricating jelly packets, BZK cleansing wipes, and a pair of nitrile exam gloves. All components are latex-free.

Clinical Guidance – Sizing

The appropriate NPA size can be determined by measuring from the tip of the patient’s nose to the tragus of the ear (“soft to soft” measurement). Average sizing guidelines:

• Adult women: approximately 6–7 mm
• Adult men: approximately 7–8 mm

How to Insert a Nasopharyngeal Airway

1. Lubricate the NPA with a water-soluble lubricating jelly
2. Insert into the nostril (preferably the right) along the floor of the nose using a gentle twisting motion
3. Aim toward the back of the opposite eyeball during insertion
4. Confirm airway patency after placement
